While calcium plays an important role in helping corals grow and develop, it cannot do this on its own. It needs help from other substances such as carbonate and bicarbonate. Besides helping with this, the two substances also contribute to buffering which is the stabilization of pH levels in the normal 8.1 to 8.4 range.

The concentration of carbonate and bicarbonate substances in an aquarium is known as carbonate alkalinity and it is recommended that you keep this value at around 2.7 meq/L. Any fluctuation higher than 5% or 0.14 meq/L is not healthy for the aquarium.

In order to maintain pH levels within the recommended range, carbonate and bicarbonate additives need to be added in order to restore the proper balance. The Salifert KH/Alk test will allow you to determine the current alkalinity level in your tank. It is very accurate and will present sharp color changes that can be easily distinguished from one another in 0.1 meq/L increments. One Salifert alkalinity test kit can be used to take between 100 and 200 different measurements.

The Salifert KH + pH Buffer can be used to make any corrections to the alkalinity levels without upsetting the pH balance. The process will usually complete within 24 hours. If this is not the case, then a problem with the aeration or gas exchange will often be the culprit.
